Victim Empowerment in South Africa – Moving towards more collaborative partnerships

On 19 and 20 June 2008, members and representatives from South African civil society organisations (CSOs) and Government met in Johannesburg for the “Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) Stakeholder Consultative Summit”. Jointly organised by the South African Department of Social Development (DSD) and UNODC ROSAF, and made possible through funding from the European Union, the Summit marked the precursor to South Africa’s 10 year VEP anniversary to be held in Durban in August 2008. UNODC Southern Africa: United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Tracking

June 26 marks the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. As the lead UN Agency in this area, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSAF) will be holding its national event in Orange Farm, Johannesburg. Held in collaboration with the South African Department of Social Development, the event aims to create broad-based community awareness around the drug usage. (more…)

United Nations heads and senior South African Government officials call for urgent action to ensure the safety and security of displaced foreign nationals; pledge to find sustainable humanitarian solutions to the crisis

Cape Town – Heads of United Nations agencies in South Africa have joined senior national Government Ministers and other high level representatives of provincial and local government in calling for urgent action to ensure the safety, security and well being of displaced persons affected by the recent outbreaks of violence in Gauteng and Western Cape provinces. UN Support to South African Government in Response to Attacks on Foreigners

(Johannesburg / New York): The United Nations System in South Africa is deeply saddened by the recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals; and concerned about the plight of almost 29,000 people displaced and currently residing in 99 ad hoc and temporary shelters in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal Provinces.
