4th Southern Africa AIDS Conference opens in Durban, South Africa

Johannesburg – Researchers, HIV programme planners, government and civil society representatives, religious and community leaders will gather in Durban, South Africa from 31 March to 3 April for the 4th South African AIDS conference. More than 3,500 from across the Southern Africa region are expected to attend the conference. With the theme “Scaling up for Success”, the conference will share best practices in HIV prevention, treatment and care and will identify barriers to scaling up responses to the HIV epidemic in Southern Africa. Helen Clark Unanimously Confirmed as New Head of UNDP New York

UNAIDS promotes combination HIV prevention towards universal access goals

Geneva – UNAIDS’ number one priority is universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. With more than 7400 new HIV infections each day the world can not stop the AIDS epidemic without stopping new HIV infections. Countries must know their epidemic and tailor their response to it. UNAIDS advocates for and supports comprehensive approaches to HIV prevention through combination strategies. (more…)

UNODC to host criminal asset confiscation conference

Pretoria – On 23 and 24 March 2009, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with the support of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) will be holding a conference dealing with criminal asset confiscation. The event is to be attended by prosecutors at DPP level and senior police officers, and will include representatives from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mauritius and Tanzania. UNIC Pretoria Commemorates International Women’s Day

Pretoria – Through the UN Communication Group, UNIC convened a panel discussion to commemorate International Women’s Day this year. Following the successful commemorations of this day over the past two years, it was felt that in spite of South Africa having a National Women’s Day on the 9th of August, there remains a need to highlight this international day in South Africa.
