The conflict in Libya has triggered a massive outflow of people to neighbouring countries, especially to Egypt and Tunisia. By the end of May 2011, close to 900,000 men, women and children had fled across the Libyan border, many with injuries and harrowing stories to tell. UNHCR staff has worked tirelessly from the earliest days of the crisis to receive the displaced and provide those waiting at the border with tents, blankets, sleeping mats, food and water. (more…)

Keeping Promises, Measuring Results Health Accountability Report Presented at World Health Assembly

Geneva, Switzerland – The United Nations Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health presented their report, Keeping Promises, Measuring Results, and recommendations to increase the likelihood that pledges for women’s and children’s health are honoured and that resources are spent in the most effective way to save lives. Monique Coleman completes week-long visit to South Africa

Pretoria Celebrated High School Musical actress Monique Coleman completed her week-long visit to South Africa on 18 May as part of her world tour as the first-ever UN Youth Champion. During her time in South Africa she engaged with more than 1,000 young people in Gauteng to raise awareness of the United Nations International Year of Youth and of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). US actress and UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman embarks on South Africa visit

Pretoria – US actress and first-ever UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman began her tour of South Africa with a visit to Simunye High School in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg on 11 May 2011. Ms. Coleman has visited ten countries since the beginning of the year to speak to young people and raise awareness about their issues as the world observes the International Year of Youth. (more…)
