UN rallies the world to protect the rights of the Girl Child

New York – With the High-Level Segment of the 2012 General Assembly still fresh in memory, UN Information Centres (UNICs) around the world marked the first International Day of the Girl Child. This was an opportune occasion to raise awareness of the plight of girls.  The planned events were organized in conjunction with local partners – Government authorities, the UNCT, NGOS, educational institutions and the media. Security Council press statement on killing of a UNAMID peacekeeper in Darfur

New York – The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the 17 October attack by unidentified armed men on an African Union-United Nations
mission (UNAMID) patrol en route to Hashaba in North Darfur, in which one South African peacekeeper was killed and three were wounded, two of them seriously. (more…)

Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General

New York – The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest possible terms the latest attack on peacekeepers in Darfur, which occurred on 17 October when an unidentified armed group attacked an African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) patrol comprised of military, police and civilian personnel on the way to Hashaba, North Darfur.
