New York – The members of the Security Council received a briefing on March 26, 2013 from Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Hervé Ladsous which outlined the security risks and operational challenges facing UNDOF, including UNTSO’s Observer Group Golan, due to the ongoing fighting in the Force’s area of operation by the parties to the Syrian domestic conflict. Central African Republic: after power grab, Security Council calls for protecting civilians

New York – The Security Council called on all parties in the Central African Republic (CAR) to refrain from acts of violence against civilians, following a week of fierce fighting that led to rebels seizing the capital, Bangui, on Sunday and forcing President François Bozizé to flee. (more…)

Ban appoints Swedish scientist to lead probe into alleged chemical weapons use in Syria

New York – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Professor Åke Sellström of Sweden to head the United Nations fact-finding mission which will investigate allegations of the reported use of chemical weapons in Syria. (more…)

DR Congo: UN peacekeepers transfer rebels to authorities after peaceful surrender

Pretoria – The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today transferred hundreds of Mayi-Mayi combatants to Kinshasa after the rebels turned over their weapons to the peacekeepers this weekend and took part in UN-led mediation. (more…)
