New UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa first visit to the region includes South Africa

New York – The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Mary Robinson, will make her first visit to the region in this new capacity from 29 April to 5 May. She will visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and South Africa, before concluding her mission at the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (more…)

Geneva – Today on World Malaria Day, Dr. Fatoumata Nafo-Traoré, speaking on behalf of hundreds of organizations in the global health partnership fighting malaria, called on donors to fully replenish the Global Fund in 2013 and on endemic countries to increase their domestic contribution to malaria control and use their malaria funding wisely and strategically. Heads of UNODC and CITES urge wildlife and forest offences to be treated as serious transnational organized crimes

Vienna – At the current Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the heads of two United Nations bodies called on countries to recognize wildlife and forest crimes as a serious form of organized crime and strengthen penalties against criminal syndicates and networks profiting from such illegal trade.
