Security Council strengthens efforts to end impunity for conflict-related sexual violence

UN – The Security Council today sent a strong signal to perpetrators of sexual violence in conflict that their crimes will not be tolerated, adopting a new resolution to strengthen efforts to end impunity for a scourge that affects not only large numbers of women and girls but also men and boys. Discrimination against widows must end, urges senior UN official on International Day

New York – The international community must take stronger action to end widespread discrimination against widows, the acting head of the United Nations entity mandated to promote gender equality today said reiterating that an estimated 115 million widows around the live below the poverty line and 81 million are subject to physical abuse. PRETORIA – UNIC Pretoria supported UNHCR in the commemoration of World Refugee Day on 20 June 2012.The event took place at Pretoria City Hall, with the participation of the Minister of Home Affairs, the Acting Mayor of Pretoria as well as UNHCR’s Regional Representative for Southern Africa, and performances by the world-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir. One of the issues addressed was xenophobia.
