The Secretary-General is following closely, and with growing concern, developments in Egypt.
The Secretary-General condemns the assassination today of Mr. Mohamed Brahmi, an opposition politician and member of Tunisia’s National Constituent Assembly. The Secretary-General notes that this is the second assassination of a prominent political figure in Tunisia this year. He calls for calm and stresses that acts of political violence weaken legitimate state institutions which underpin the democratic process. (more…)
GREAT LAKES – The Security Council today restated its commitment to the United Nations-brokered peace accord for Africa’s strife-torn Great Lakes region and demanded an immediate end to hostilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where fresh clashes between armed rebels and Congolese troops have sent thousands of civilians fleeing for safety.
