Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Tunisia

The Secretary-General condemns the assassination today of Mr. Mohamed Brahmi, an opposition politician and member of Tunisia’s National Constituent Assembly. The Secretary-General notes that this is the second assassination of a prominent political figure in Tunisia this year. He calls for calm and stresses that acts of political violence weaken legitimate state institutions which underpin the democratic process.  (more…)

High-level Security Council debate focuses on peace efforts for Africa’s Great Lakes region

GREAT LAKES – The Security Council today restated its commitment to the United Nations-brokered peace accord for Africa’s strife-torn Great Lakes region and demanded an immediate end to hostilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where fresh clashes between armed rebels and Congolese troops have sent thousands of civilians fleeing for safety. New York – I am delighted and grateful that Member States have adopted a resolution officially designating November 19th as World Toilet Day.  I thank the Government of Singapore for its leadership on a crucially important global issue.  This new annual observance will go a long way toward raising awareness about the need for all human beings to have access to sanitation.
