The theme of this year’s observance of World Cities Day — ‘Designed to Live Together’ — highlights the key role of urban design in building sustainable, socially integrated and prosperous urban environments.

Good design can help tackle climate change. It reduces the impacts of disaster.
It can help make our cities safer, cleaner, and more equal and integrative. It promotes equal access to services, jobs and opportunities, and fosters contentment. (more…)

UN in South Africa turns Pretoria blue to mark its 70th anniversary

Pretoria, South Africa, October 24, 2015– The United Nations in South Africa today took part in the global campaign to commemorate UN Day and the 70th anniversary of the organisation. 70 students from schools in Tshwane joined UN staff and members of the public dressed in the UN blue, took part in a peaceful walk from the UN offices to the Pretoria Technical High School where a variety of activities such as song, poems, dance and speeches, took place. This was explicitly acknowledged in 2014, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics to promote citizen’s entitlement to public information.
