Annual SAIIA-KAS International Careers Evening Report

By | 1 September 2015

A career with the United Nations organization offers a unique opportunity for qualified individuals with a passion for international development to contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing issues. Most university students who aspire to be part of the UN systems normally ask this common question, “How could we get involved with UN programmes and what kind of studies should we pursue to get employment in the organization?”

UNIC Pretoria has become a common face at the annual Career Fair hosted this year by South African International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg on 12 August 2015. The Fair attract more than 300 students throughout Johannesburg and Pretoria. Among other exhibitors were the British High Commission, World Bank Group, The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to name a few.

The UNIC interns sourced a wide range of UN information materials which were displayed on an exhibition table in the venue. Most of the materials were disseminated among the interested students – posters, publications, brochures and bookmarks among other. The evening was filled with lots of excitement and zeal from the students. UNIC engaged the students in a quiz on the UN and were rewarded with UN branded t-shirts, USB’s, diaries, table books and posters. The response was resoundingly impressive as most of the students were very knowledgeable and insightful about the UN.

In addition to eagerly receiving the information materials, the UNIC Librarian, Hope Kabamba, and the UNIC interns present, were asked lot of questions on, among other issues, UN job openings both globally and nationally, the UNIC internship programme, volunteering as well as the work of the UN in South Africa. The evening was an overall success.
