ohchrNEW YORK (26 October 2016) – United Nations human expert Ikponwosa Ero today called on all government representatives gathered at the UN General Assembly to take urgent measures to put an end to the growing problem of violence and extreme discrimination against persons with albinism.

unflagThe Secretary-General regrets the decision of the South African Government to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. He recalls the significant role played by South Africa in the establishment of the International Criminal Court, including as one of the first signatories of the Rome Statute. He hopes South Africa will reconsider its decision before its withdrawal takes effect.

dayofthegirlThe theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl is based on the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. The slogan is: Girls’ Progress equals Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls.

The well-being, human rights and empowerment of the world’s 1.1 billion girls are central to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. When we agreed on that agenda, we promised girls quality education and health services.
