Seventy-five inspiring, young leaders, gathered at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) to host their own negotiation session themed: ‘Connecting the past to the present: Young South Africans shaping a sustainable future’. The session was hosted as part of the fourth Young Leaders Conference and focused on equipping South African youth with knowledge and understanding of local and international issues connected to sustainability and helping them to tackle current challenges such as climate change, HIV/AIDS and women empowerment.

Globally, new HIV infections among adults and children were reduced by 40% since the peak in 1997. However, new analysis from UNAIDS shows that new HIV infections among adults have stalled, failing to decline for at least five years. The report outlines what is needed to step up prevention efforts
GENEVA, 12 July 2016—A new report by UNAIDS reveals concerning trends in new HIV infections among adults. The Prevention gap report shows that while significant progress is being made in stopping new HIV infections among children (new HIV infections have declined by more than 70% among children since 2001 and are continuing to decline), the decline in new HIV infections among adults has stalled. The report shows that HIV prevention urgently needs to be scaled up among this age group. (more…)

The United Nations today launched a new initiative to recognize exceptional young people who are leaders in the effort to end poverty, combat climate change and reduce inequalities. Spear-headed by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the UN Young Leaders Initiative will recognize on an annual basis 17 young leaders who are driving change to help realize the Sustainable Development Goals. “Light in darkness for persons with albinism” – UN experts hail progress despite dire obstacles
GENEVA (10 June 2016) – Speaking ahead of International Albinism Awareness Day on Monday 13 June, a group of seven United Nations human rights experts* hails the fast-growing movement to defend the human rights of persons with albinism, and their increased engagement to fight for their rights. However, they warn that the way ahead is still long and fraught with hurdles.
