The UN is celebrating the achievements of Africa with a week-long series of events on Strengthening Partnerships for Inclusive Sustainable Development, Good Governance, Peace and Stability in Africa. The Africa Week will bring together at UNHQ high-level representatives of UN Member States, UN System entities, African regional and sub-regional organizations.

This week, Africa is at the centre of discussions at the UN. Bringing together institutional, traditional, new and emergent
partners of the continent, the discussion will focus on the best way forward, to build mutually beneficial relationships aiming at implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and the AU’s Agenda 2063 across Africa.

Migration Dynamics, Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa

africa-2On 19 September the United Nations General Assembly hosted its first ever High-Level Summit to Address Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach to addressing the worst refugee crisis since the end of WWII. The summit provided an historic opportunity to develop a blueprint for a better international response. On the occasion of this meeting, UNAI asked researches at UNAI member institutions to submit articles highlighting their research and its implications in helping to solve this issue. Through this series, UNAI hopes to provide an understanding of refugee/migrant flows to its readers, highlight the importance of addressing refugee and migration flows in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and showcase the work of professors and researchers at UNAI institutions. Please note that the articles are for discussion, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations.

UNIC visit to Curro Independent School in Roodeplaat Pretoria for teh International Day of Peace commemoration

PRETORIA – 21 September 2016 – 

This year, to commemorate the International day of Peace, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) partnered with UN Volunteers and the African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) to educate learners on peace and its link to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The day began at Curro Independent School in Roodeplaat where primary school learners were informed and quizzed about their knowledge of the UN and what peace means to them with many saying that peace “is to not fight and to find solutions to conflicts”

The United Nations in South Africa all-female soccer team won 1-0 in a friendly match against the Vakhegula Vakhegula soccer team on Friday, 12 August 2016 at the CSIR soccer pitch in Pretoria. The match, in celebration of Women’s Month in South Africa, was aimed at bringing together women from various backgrounds who play a pivotal role in advancing the cause of disadvantaged and impoverished communities in their respective areas across the country.
