UN Women launches ​What About Gender?

UN Women South Africa Multi Country Office invited our colleagues from other UN agencies to join us in opening the office. The festivities began with Representative Dr Auxilia Ponga cutting the ribbon at the entrance to the boardroom with Deputy Representative Themba Kalua, before UN Resident Coordinator in South Africa Mr. Gana Fofang delivered a welcome speech and awarded certificates to those who had participated in the Gender Theme Group training run by UN Women. A table was set up where our male colleagues could sign up at HeForShe.org and many promised to recruit more sign-ups from colleagues, some even going to offices in the building immediately to fetch them. Geneva, 28 July 2015 – Speaking ahead of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, United Nations human rights expert Maria Grazia Giammarinaro calls for sweeping changes in policy and on perception of trafficking. Fighting trafficking is not just about law enforcement, the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children reminds governments across the world.

Special Envoy de Mistura continues Geneva consultations
Within the framework of the Geneva Consultations, Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura met on 2 July with a delegation of the Syrian National Coalition of Revolutionary and Opposition Forces led by Coalition President Khaled Khoja. Mr. Khoja and other members of the delegation briefed on the latest efforts of the Coalition and the situation in and around Syria. They also discussed perspectives for a political solution to the conflict. This week, Special Envoy de Mistura intends to travel to New York to report to the Secretary-General on his findings from the initial phase of the Geneva Consultations. While in New York, Mr. de Mistura will hold further meetings with regional and international stakeholders to prepare for the planned Security Council meeting at the end of July.
