Model UN Finals

Cape Town, 20 October 2014 – The UN Information Centre (UNIC) Pretoria once again participated in the Finals of the South African Model United Nations Competition for High Schools (SAMUN) from 17 to 20 October 2014.

SAMUN 2014 (22 of 23)Students from both resourced and under-resourced high schools from throughout South Africa (and a team from Namibia) debated, discussed and deliberated on key issues facing the world today. UNIC Director Helene Hoedl was one of four adjudicators who assessed the performance of the students while UNIC National Information Officer, Sudeshan Reddy, conducted interviews with all the participants and coordinated some of the debates.

The three General Assembly sessions focused on “State-sanctioned homophobia”, “Fracking for natural gas” and an the “Ebola crisis”, during which these dynamic young leaders argued from the position of specific member states of the UN. Following the debates, the participants, along with UNIC Director Helene Hoedl, spent a night on the iconic Robben Island where the winners were announced. A team of 12 students will attend an international Model UN conference in the US next year.
