Date: 13 July 2020, Pretoria: The United Nations in South Africa is extending its condolences on the passing of Ms. Zindzi Mandela, the daughter of the late President Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
“It was with a great sense of shock and sadness that I learned of the passing on of Ms. Zindzi Mandela,” said the head of the UN in South Africa and Resident Coordinator, Ms. Nardos Bekele-Thomas.
Being the youngest daughter of her iconic parents, Ms. Mandela will be remembered for her courage and activism during South Africa’s struggle for freedom. One of her most poignant moments was in February 1985 when she read her father’s speech, who was in jail at the time, snubbing then President PW Botha’s conditional offer of freedom. A freedom fight veteran in her own right, she will be remembered for her bravery and generous nature in sharing her parents with the rest of the world.
The UN in South Africa further extends its sincere condolences to her family, friends and the Government of South Africa as well as to its partners, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Thembikile Mandela Foundation who worked closely with her on various initiatives.
May Her Soul Rest in Peace.
