Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, in the margins of the 67th General Assembly

New York – The Secretary-General met the President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma.  The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for South Africa’s leadership role on some key African issues.

The Secretary-General and President noted their deep concern about the situation in the Sahel, especially northern Mali, and the need for the international community to play a bigger role in resolving the problems in the affected countries.

They also discussed ways to improve security and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They agreed on the great importance of a strong and united African voice both on climate change issues and also sustainable development, two priority issues for the continent and entire world.
