Secretary General’s remarks on Global Pact for the Environment at UNGA

By | 20 September 2017

19 September 2017 – This understanding is common to both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change – as it was underlined by my predecessors.

But the clock is ticking and we are too slow.

In the coming months, we have the climate change conference in Bonn, President Macron’s climate summit in Paris and the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi.

We urgently need to build on these events with even stronger, more coordinated action to reach our 2030 targets.

The Global Pact for the Environment, proposed by the Government of France, will capture this vital commitment in a universal text.

It is about our duty of care to provide an environment that supports the health, well-being, dignity, and prosperity of everyone on this planet.

Let us support this worthy initiative.

Thank you.
