On the 4th of June 2008, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the Embassy of Peru, the University of Pretoria, Potatoes South Africa and the Department of Agriculture will host a photographic exhibition in celebration of the International Year of the Potato.
2008 was declared the International Year of the Potato by the United Nations. The corresponding resolution adopted on 25 November 2005 by the Food and Agriculture Organization facilitates the implementation of the year and affirms “the need to revive public awareness of the relationship that exists between poverty, food security, malnutrition and the potential contribution of the potato to defeating hunger.”
The mission statement of the International Year of the Potato is to increase awareness of the importance of the potato as a food in developing nations, and promote research and development of potato-based systems as a means of contributing to achievement of the United Nations Millennium Developments Goals.
