Call for accelerated action to achieve Millennium Development Goal 2:  Universal Primary Education by 2015
On 8 June 2010, the Government of South Africa and the initiative “Sports for Peace” supported by the United Nations  will host a gala event at the symbolic Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg to draw attention to the Millennium Development Goals, (MDGs) particularly MDG 2: Achieve universal primary education by 2015. 75 million children around the world are still out of school, and it is urgent to invest in education to realize the dream of a world without poverty.

This event will promote development and peace through education. The UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki-moon will attend and address the event on these issues.

The “Sports for Peace Gala” supported by the UN will bring together around 400  personalities – from sports, politics and culture – to raise awareness on the urgent necessity to give every child on earth the opportunity to go to school and to promote the MDGs.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation intends to make the MDG 2 a key milestone of the 2010 Nelson Mandela International Day campaign on 18 July, and representatives of the Foundation will be present at the Gala. A key partner will be “1 GOAL”, an initiative that was launched in 2009 in over 100 countries. A co-chair of “1 GOAL”, will present an update on the initiative at this event, which commences at 18h00.

The event will also include the promotion of a song initiated by the United Nations in South Africa on the MDGs called “8 Goals for Africa”, supporting the MDG campaign in Africa and encouraging commitment to the achievement of all eight MDGs.
