On 7 August 2014, UN Information Centre (UNIC) Pretoria National Information Officer Sudeshan Reddy introduced 100 eager grade nine learners at Roedean High School for Girls in Johannesburg to the work of the United Nations.
During a lively question-and-answer session, the learners posed a variety of informed questions ranging from the current role of the United Nations in Gaza, to the reform of the UN Security Council. Three UNIC interns, Alyaa Siddig, Doa Nofal and Leone Opfou, also spoke of their internship responsibilities as they encouraged the learners to take up UNIC internships once they get to university.
UNIC disseminated UN information materials, with human rights-focused posters being particularly popular. The teacher Marj Brown thanked the UNIC team for the informative and inspirational presentations, noting that
“the feedback from the girls was so positive – they were very excited about what they had learnt.”
Once again, learners from Roedean High Schools for Girls showed to be knowledgeable and aware future leaders with a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and global issues.
